The film is an author's interpretation of the events of 1905 Revolution in Odesa.
The film is based on a story about a mutiny on a battleship Prince Potemkin of Tavria held in 1905. This was, in fact, the first title of the film – "1905". The sailors' revolt, caused by the order to shoot the disobedient sailors who refused to eat rotten meat, has found support among the inhabitants of Odesa. But most of them had a high price to pay: while trying to quench the unrest in the heart of the city, the tsarist troops opened fire on the crowd.
