Louise, a young shop assistant at the New Babylon shop and her lover, a Paris soldier Jean are separated by the revolution of 1871.

They end up supporting different sides of the revolution. Louise, proven by the harassment of the shopkeeper and hunger, becomes a communard. Jean remains with those who cracked down on the rebels. The film is Elena Kuzmina's debut role and Shostakovich debut in composing scores for cinema.
