Another title for the film is Storm the Sky. A striking example of the Soviet film avant-garde, filled with reminiscences to the works of the Impressionists. The founders of the FEX creative union, Trauberg and Kozintsev, inspired by the prose of Emile Zola, reproduce the events of the Paris commune. Louise, a young shop assistant at the New Babylon shop and her lover, a Paris soldier Jean are separated by the revolution of 1871.
They end up supporting different sides of the revolution. Louise, proven by the harassment of the shopkeeper and hunger, becomes a communard. Jean remains with those who cracked down on the rebels. The film is Elena Kuzmina's debut role and Shostakovich debut in composing scores for cinema.
